We have all been using this kind of technology for years with little or no knowledge of how it works. The led or light emitting diode to give it its correct name works like this: The LED consists of a chip of semiconducting material impregnated, as in other diodes, current flows easily from the positive side, to the negative side, or cathode, but not in the reverse direction. Charge-carriers—electrons and holes—flow into the junction from electrodes with different voltages When an electron meets a hole, it falls into a lower energy level, and releases energy in the form of a photon.

The wave length of the light emitted, and therefore its color, depends on the band gap energy of the materials forming the positive negative junction. In silicon or germanium diodes, the electrons and holes recombine by a non-radiative transition which produces no optical emission, because these are indirect band gap materials. The materials used for the LED have a direct band gap with energies corresponding to near-infrared, visible or near-ultraviolet light.

So now you know how it works simple or what.

How many of us use mobile phones or tom toms with a flat led screen invented back in the seventies. the remote controls most of us have in abundance at home work with infrared leds.possibly we could blame the invention of the led for obesity in the fact they make it easy to become a couch potato.i am using this computer with an optical mouse the ever popular Nintendo wii’s sensor bar uses you’ve guessed it infrared leds.

At night when flying it is imperative for pilots to retain their night vision so they use red and yellow leds in the cock pit. This technology is also used in night field vision glasses that allow you to see in the dark.

If you own a high end car you will probably if it was brought in the last year it will have brake lights that work on led technology. Bus and trucks have had this technology for a few years now.
